I’ve always been excited by each new Viva Glam release from MAC. It’s a great
excuse reason to add to my lippie collection while also doing a good deed. But at the same time, I still want to pick out lipsticks that I know would be a flattering choice. From reading the reviews, seeing the swatches, and taking into consideration how flattering fuchsia lipsticks are, I instantly knew that
I just had to have the MAC Viva Glam Taraji P Henson Matte Lipstick (USD 17.50 / PHP 1,050).
Quick Specs: 3 g / 0.10 US oz ; made in Canada
Taking it a step up from the subtler metallic red accent that the earlier Viva Glam releases had on the shell/tube, the special Taraji P. Henson line is housed in hot pink from lid to base. Fittingly feisty, especially for fans of Empire’s Cookie Lyon. (But then again, if you’ve seen Taraji doing interviews, she’s very well got her own brand of fierce that doesn’t necessarily have to do with the Cookie persona.)
Application is smooth and creamy for a MAC matte without any tendency for bleeding on the edges. The color comes on in thin yet pigmented layers that feel light and comfortable on the pout. I have a hard time explaining but the coverage isn’t fully opaque though the color *pops*. Imagine a heavily tinted lip balm or a lip tint: It has that “neon” factor without a hint of milkiness in the background.
The color of Viva Glam Taraji P. Henson is a bright fuchsia with what looks like hot pink microshimmer, giving it a subtle metallic tinge. I find that the shade stands out nicely on my pale skin and doesn’t make my teeth look yellow like other fuchsia lipsticks tend to. As mentioned, the finish is matte, and I get 4 hours of comfortable wear and non-fading color before I eat and drink. After at least an hour of having it on, the lipstick leaves behind a bright pink stain that tends to settle on the inner lips. It actually looks like a Korean style ombre lip, so that’s a bonus!
Verdict: The rave reviews for this celeb collab lipstick are totally justified IMHO. I’m always wary of adding shades of fuchsia to my collection as they are often hit or miss, but this one has become a personal favorite lipstick for 2017.
