While the first quarter of 2017 may be done, I am still sorting through my 2016 holiday haul. Naturally, beauty-loving friends went a little Black Friday gaga and pooled our US purchases for shipping to Manila. The first of my buys making a debut for review here is the Intro to Tarte Deluxe Discovery Set (USD 10). *Note that this is a limited edition set for Black Friday that is no longer being sold, but there are resellers still offering this set.

Admission: Before seeing the promotional pics for the Alexis Ren X Colourpop collab, I had no idea who Alexis Ren was. This is just a testament to my lack of IG guru knowledge. (For that matter, it is a testament to my general lack of influencer “who’s who” knowledge. Sorry! 😦 ) But the teaser photos were enough to pique my interest, especially after seeing the lipstick swatches. A small group of beauty junkie buddies pooled our orders to have the collection shipped to Manila, and now I give you my review for the Alexis Ren X Colourpop Blotted Lip in Lexi (USD 5)

This might sound blasphemous to some, but I don’t have the best of relationships with matte liquid lipstick. I neither like the dry feeling, nor do I appreciate how most of them will go crumbly and re-apply unevenly after meals. In short, comfort is a major factor in lip color, so I’ll only start using a liquid lipstick that feels right even if it isn’t necessarily a flat matte. A perfect example is Clinique Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Black Licorice Pop (PHP 1,100 ; USD 18.50).

I like to think that part of the appeal in playing with makeup is the addition of a “magic touch” to FOTDs. It doesn’t always have to be a major transformation. It could be a hint of sparkle here and there or a lit from within glow, subtle alterations that can brighten up the face. One such product that has a reputation for giving lips a flattering rosy boost is Lipstick Queen Frog Prince (USD 25).

Lip balm was my very first beauty product, and I haven’t been without it since the mid-90’s. I may be all about the lipstick now, but I still put on a lip moisturizer every night before bed. And just when I thought that lip butter was the height of sophistication for lip care, the lip oil trend has exploded! There’s even tinted lip oil now. Currently, I am starting with the more basic stuff and using The Saem Eco Soul Lip Oil in Honey (PHP 320) from Althea Korea.
