I think I’ve figured out my 2017 beauty goal halfway through the year: I’m planning to explore the world of stick concealers! Why cover-up sticks specifically? They are so convenient to tote around that I can see myself popping one or two sticks in my daily makeup bag for a quick round of hide-and-seek with blemishes and dark circles. I’ll start off the collection with Shiseido Perfecting Stick Concealer in 22 Natural Light (PHP 1,350).

When I first started really investing in makeup and skincare, I would sign up for all the free workshops I could find. I marveled at the expert technique and quickly adapted the ones that were suited to my facial features. It also didn’t hurt that these workshops would offer 1-day discounts on products that scarcely went on sale. Fast forward to 2017, and I still find myself occasionally joining workshops to keep up with the trends and tech of the beauty industry. The latest one is the Nars Natural High Workshop with celeb makeup artist, Albert Kurniawan, sharing some of his tricks of the trade.

I confess: Before my beauty writing colleagues mentioned their desire to try products of Indie brand, Deciem, I never even knew about The Ordinary. But the thrill was palpable as they discussed shipping the stuff to Manila and, yes, there was a little bit of FOMO on my part. When I heard that they were stocking up from a local reseller, I was in! I got only 2 products to start with, the first being The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (USD 9.8).

While I was in high school and only starting to learn about makeup, one of the first few luxury brands that I started seeing virtually everywhere was Shu Uemura. I was all about wishlisting their iconic cleansing oils and lash curlers, and I was so stoked to finally get their classic curler some years later. Fast forward to 2017 when the brand has unfortunately left the Philippines, leaving brokenhearted fans in its wake. But before the last of their boutiques closed its doors, I was able to grab the Shu Uemura Stage Performer Glow Creator in Warm Glow (SRP = SGD 62).

How high does concealer rank on your absolute must-haves? It’s right up there on my Top 3, along with lipstick and brow pencil. In fact, that’s one of the first things I started learning to use, because of dark circle issues. And to this day, concealer shopping is a hit or miss, be it drugstore finds or high-end brands. So for today, I’ve got two drugstore-priced Kbeauty ones here to judge: The Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer in 1.5 Natural Beige (PHP 320) and The Saem Cover Perfection Pot oncealer in 01 Clear Beige (PHP 180) from Althea Korea.
